Placed no items for sale- Gary Player blasts son Marc for auctioning memorabilia without permi

Publish date: 2024-06-19

Gary Player‘s memorabilia has been auctioned twice in three years without his permission. The nine-time major winner isn’t happy. The 86-year-old South African World Golf Hall of Famer wrote a statement on Twitter and Instagram on Monday alleging his son Marc, who supervised his financial affairs for more than 20 years, put several of his trophies up for auction without his permission.

In a statement, my son and former manager, Marc, said, “I would like to raise the public’s attention to the fact that various trophies and other items of memorabilia that form part of my history have been put up for sale. I have taken steps to recover these artifacts since they are mine. I haven’t listed anything for sale, either through an auction or otherwise.”

An ongoing legal dispute has taken place between Gary Player and Marc

Marc Player replied on Twitter that he was out of town and wouldn’t be available until Tuesday. Gary Player’s brand and legal counsel told Golf Digest, “The auction house has pulled the trophies from the online auction and is keeping them until settlement.”

Throssell stated, “I can’t name the auction company, and Gary Player is seeking a secret settlement with Marc Player last year.”
“Goods that Mr. Player either won tournaments with, was given [to him] by sponsors [tournament bags, etc.] as well as trophies earned by Mr. Player over his career” are among the things, Throssell stated.

When Marc Player served as his father’s manager, according to Throssell, the objects were given to him with the understanding that they would be handled with Mr. Player’s best interests in mind. Golden Age Golf Auctions held an auction in December 2020 for eight of Player’s trophies, including copies of four of his major championship trophies. The total amount raised by the four main awards was $578,843.

The trophies “were previously sold to a private collector to raise money for charity purposes,” according to Golden Age Auctions at the time. “One of only five people to achieve the career grand slam”, Player claimed in a statement at the time of that sale, “These trophies have been put up for auction without my authorization.”

Wayne Player, Gary Player’s eldest son, was expelled from the 2021 Masters and banned from the tournament. Wayne Player, serving as his father’s caddie, displayed a sleeve of OnCore golf balls when Lee Elder broke the tournament’s color barrier in 1975. He was seen as a salesman. Elder died in November 2021 at age 87.
