Who is Tony Lewis Sr., Released From Prison 30 Years Later?
Tony Lewis Sr. has spent almost three decades in prison because of his involvement in the region’s largest and most known cr@ck-coc@ine crime ring. The D.C. drug lord was serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole after being convicted of participating in a 1989 conspiracy with 29 other people.
Years have gone by since Tony Lewis Jr. began campaigning for his father’s release from jail, during which time he has organized rallies, collected signatures on petitions and even petitioned President Biden to change the country’s clemency program so that other families like his own can be reunited.
Lewis Jr. and his family went to the Federal Detention Institution in Cumberland, Maryland (at 14601 Burbridge Road SE) on a Monday, March 20, 2023, to pick up Lewis Sr.
His daughters greeted their Poppop with a “Welcome Home Tony, Sr.” sign. Lewis Jr. had just turned nine when his father was convicted, as per Fox reports. As of this year, he’ll be 42.
The community leader’s son posted images of his doting father on Instagram, showing him surrounded by his many happy faces. A father and kid have a hug they’ve been waiting for and the joy and relief radiates from the screen of one filtered shot.
‘Tony Lewis Free’ is written over the image. FOX 5 has confirmed with the Federal Bureau of Prisons that Lewis Sr. was granted release from FCI Cumberland on Monday, March 20, 2023.
Lewis Jr. wrote on Instagram, “Thanks for every prayer, every showing of support for us during this tumultuous journey, We did it.”
He also expressed gratitude to Brittany K. Barnett, his father’s attorney comparing her to “Harriet Tubman” and an “angel of liberation” for her role in bringing him home.
According to Barnett, her motion in 2021 around Thanksgiving asking for Lewis Sr.’s release was denied. In short order, a clemency plea was submitted, but to no avail. A judge in Washington, DC granted Barnett’s motion on Friday, 2022.
