Gordon “Butch” Stewart commonly popularly known as Butch Stewart, was a Jamaican hotelier and businessman. He was the founder, owner, and chairman of Sandals Resorts, Beaches Resorts, and their parent company Sandals Resorts International, as well as The ATL Group and its subsidiaries Appliance Traders and The Jamaica Observer.
Stewart received honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from the University of the West Indies in 2001 and from the University of Technology, Jamaica in 2009. He also received an honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree from Johnson & Wales University in 2011.
Stewart started selling fish he caught to local hotels at age 12, developing a taste for entrepreneurship. He then embarked on a career as a “master salesman at the renowned Dutch-owned Curaçao Trading Company, quickly rising to the position of sales manager but itching to start his own company.”
In 1968, with no collateral “but recognizing the comfort that would make air conditioning an essential service, Stewart convinced American manufacturer Fedders Corporation to allow him to represent their brand in Jamaica. With that, Stewart’s foundational business – Appliance Traders Limited (ATL), was born and he was on his way.”
